Substitute Advocate

Crossroads Safehouse operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide safe housing and services to victims of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse. The sub-advocate position provides crisis intervention, advocacy, emotional support, information, and referrals by phone (crisis calls) and in-person to residential and non-residential clients. Substitute Advocates are critical to staffing the shelter and programs in the evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays

Supervision Received and Exercised: Reports to and receives supervision from the Program Managers. Exercises no supervision except to guide the efforts of interns and volunteers as assigned.

Hours, Wages, and Benefits: $15.50 per hour; paid sick and holiday pay for holidays worked. A minimum of 32 hours per month to supplement shelter-wide shift schedule. Sub-advocates are critical to ensuring that there is 24/7 coverage in the evenings, weekdays, overnight, over the weekend, and during the holidays. Substitute Advocates may have the opportunity to pick up additional shifts during the week and will be contacted to fill shifts that are open due to illness, scheduled vacations, unexpected absences.

Essential Functions

Crisis Intervention & Victim Advocacy
 Provides crisis intervention in-person and via phone to victims of domestic violence.
 Conducts client intakes, new resident orientation, policy contracts, and client exits.
 Participates as a member of Crossroads Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART), including on-call shifts.
 Responds to the safety and welfare of the residents of Crossroads’ Emergency Shelter.
 Maintains current knowledge of interpersonal abuse.

General Responsibilities
 Serves as a member of the staff team including staff meetings, team efforts in problem-solving, applicable program and policy development, program evaluation, and planning.
 Performs recordkeeping functions pertaining to clients in shelter programs, including data collection, reporting, and case notes.
 Maintains supply of forms and handouts, assembles client files and folders.
 Maintains care of the facility by reporting needed repairs and health/safety hazards to the facilities manager.
 Assists in maintaining the shelter and helps ensure the readiness of rooms for occupancy. This includes minor maintenance, necessary cleaning, laundry, stocking of linens and supplies, sanitation of surfaces, and other chores.
 Performs related duties as assigned by program managers.


Required Qualifications
 Ability to effectively de-escalate crisis situations.
 Ability to lift up to 40 pounds. Ability to climb on flight of stairs.
 Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications
 Experience in human services, domestic violence-related work, or related field preferred.
 Knowledge of local community and human services resources.
 Spanish speaking.
 A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Behavioral Science or related field.
